Strategic Navigation for the
Indepdendent Traveler
Case Study

The Challenge
An active individual in his mid-eighties with a lifelong passion for world travel faced the common friction of balancing his desire for independence with the realities of aging. While "aging in place" and continuing to travel was his primary goal, he recognized that he needed more than generic advice. He required a proactive, strategic plan to maintain his autonomy in the home he loved, so that his environment supported his lifestyle wherever he went, and establish a clear strategy for when his needs changed.
Holland Living was originally engaged for a home environment assessment. However, we became a strategic partner connecting his home environment strategy with his long-term care planning, all while keeping his travel ambitions at the forefront.
Integrated Partner Alignment Recognizing that long-term travel and aging in place require a connected strategy, Holland Living recommended that he engage a Care Manager to establish his overarching clinical care plan. With that care plan in hand, we used it as our foundational blueprint—translating its health, mobility, and safety guidelines directly into tailored home environment recommendations, discreet accessibility updates, and smart technology setups. We coordinated directly with the client and the Care Manager to evaluate his long-term living options and identify future transition triggers, aligning both strategies so they were systematically documented without friction.
The Roadmap
For our part, we provided a detailed roadmap for safety and technology updates that supported him both at home and abroad, prioritizing items to focus on now, soon, and in the future. To respect the client’s fierce desire and capacity for autonomy, we added granular detail and specifications to the Roadmap. This enabled him to self-implement at his own pace with recommendations tailored to both his home environment and his frequent travels, including:
-
Automated Home Safeguards: Smart controls for kitchen appliances and utilities to automatically mitigate hazards (such as stove or kettle misuse), providing peace of mind while the home is vacant.
-
Emergency Connectivity: Personal device configuration settings for travel, including location-sharing features for designated support teams, medical identification profiles accessible from lock screens, and training on emergency response tools to support safety in unfamiliar environments.
-
Digital Integrity & Protection: Robust data management practices—including secure password storage and automated backups—to protect the client’s identity and personal information against digital threats while he is roaming.
-
Discreet Physical Safety: High-quality, stylish safety modifications—including improved pathway lighting and structural support hardware—that promote daily routine safety without the "clinical" look of standard healthcare hardware.
