Remote Navigation and Multi-State Family Support

Case Study

The Challenge

An independent couple in their eighties living in an active adult community in Arizona wanted to proactively adapt their living environment to support long-term autonomy. However, with their adult children residing in Washington State and Idaho, the family faced the anxiety of managing evolving mobility, fall risks, and daily routine friction across 1,500 miles. The adult children wanted to establish clear family roles and prevent burnout without making their parents feel "handled" or overriding their independence. The family needed a trusted, remote strategic partner to evaluate the home environment, establish an actionable strategy, and clear logistical fog across three states.

Serving as the family’s remote strategic ally, Holland Living bridged the multi-state divide by leading a comprehensive virtual home assessment and developing a customized Home Environment Roadmap. We organized immediate priorities into a clear "Now, Soon, and Someday" framework, integrated remote safety and communication technology, and vetted local resources for the family to evaluate. The result was total clarity for the out-of-state adult children and renewed confidence for the parents to remain comfortably in the home they love.

  • Virtual Assessment & Multi-Phase Roadmap: Conducted an in-depth remote home environment assessment to evaluate room layouts, accessibility, fall hazards, and daily routine friction points. Designed a structured roadmap that aligned family members across Arizona, Washington, and Idaho around shared priorities and clear timelines.

  • Technology for Connection & Safety: Modernized the parents' devices remotely, configuring Apple Watch fall detection, setting up robocall and spam filtering, and optimizing communication settings to protect against phone scams and promote a safer daily routine.

  • Curated Resource Vetting & Family Empowerment: Recognizing the complexity of the parents' long-term health needs, we educated the family on the distinct value of an Aging Life Care Manager for clinical advocacy and medical oversight. We then researched and compiled a vetted shortlist of local, accredited professionals for the family to interview and engage directly, empowering them to establish dedicated clinical coordination while Holland Living remained focused on the physical and digital home environment.
