The Challenge

Facing the prospect of their first move in 40 years, a couple in their mid-eighties needed a dedicated guide to navigate a complex, multi-state transition. They were relocating from two established residences—a primary home in Monroe and a mountain getaway in Jefferson—to a new construction home in Maryland, located just three miles from their son’s family.

We provided end-to-end guidance to turn a complex, multi-state transition into a seamless experience. By the end of move-in week, the couple was ready to settle in comfortably, with artwork hung and living spaces organized. To facilitate a low-pressure transition, we organized a designated storage area in the basement, allowing them to curate remaining items at their own pace and feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.

Compassionate Downsizing: Managing the contents of two long-term homes—filled with decades of memories, fine art, and antiques—was a significant undertaking. We engaged senior move managers to handle the sorting and packing for both properties in North Carolina and the unpacking in Maryland. We cataloged and maintained a detailed inventory of every item and its final destination whether to move, gift, sell, or donate, providing peace of mind during a major life transition.

Strategic Real Estate Coordination: We served as a trusted advisor to the homeowners as they navigated listing both properties. We coordinated with a single realtor who held a footprint in both the Jefferson and Monroe areas, allowing us to coordinate trusted contractors to address necessary home repairs—including two roof replacements—before the properties hit the market.

Comprehensive Move Planning: We spearheaded the complex, multi-stage logistics, securing and managing movers, packers, art hangers, and an interior designer. We were on-site in North Carolina and Maryland to facilitate a smooth transition, including a months-long stay in their secondary property. Additionally, we collaborated with a Senior Health Advocate to handle building a medical notebook that had all of their important records while they were in transition and supported them to schedule appointments with their new local providers before they arrived.

Technology with Purpose: To support the husband who uses a cochlear implant, and because we care about the whole experience, we implemented communication technologies that supported him in participating fully in all calls and video conferences throughout the planning process.
